What are Equality Reps?

We believe all students, regardless of their background, deserve to have an amazing experience at Northumbria. Equity, diversity and inclusion is at the heart of what we do, and our team is here to support you.

Equality Reps are at the very heart of NSU democracy, speaking up for students from groups that are marginalised within our society and education system.  They get to know what students in their equality group care about, provide support to address key issues, and actively represent their interests to NSU and the University.

Collectively they do this by:

  • Acting as a point of contact for students within the University to raise issues relating to their personal characteristics.
  • Campaigning on their manifesto issues, seeking student support and lobbying NSU and the University for positive change.
  • Speaking up for students to the University and ensure the student voice is heard loud and clear.
  • Being a source of information and insight for Sabbatical Officers, NSU staff and academic representatives into the experience of students in your community to help those staff and students be more effective in their roles.
  • Working with the Sabbatical officers and Union staff to help deliver the Union’s education strategy and objectives.
  • Encouraging University staff to listen to students and to value their views and experiences.
