There are loads of benefits to being a Programme Rep! The most important one is that you as a rep will be involved in sharing feedback from your fellow students with the university on how students have enjoyed (or not enjoyed) their uni experience. But you'll be doing more than just gathering feedback - you'll be involved in conversations with relevant university staff on how to make changes students actually want to see.
You are an expert in the student experience - you know more than staff and even the Students' Union about what students want and need, and being a Programme Rep is the best way to be part of those conversations.
Being a Programme Rep isn't just about feedback, though. Here are some additional benefits:
Training and support
Programme Reps are trained and supported by the SABB Team, and the Student Voice Team. You will receive an in-depth training experience that you can complete around your studies. Training is mandatory and is there to help you fully prepare to take on your role, to ensure you have the knowledge and resources to effectively support your students and be a great representative. You will only be formally recognised for your work as a Programme Rep once you have attended training. Beyond training, our support is continuous, we are here for you throughout your rep journey.
Extracurricular opportunities
Want to take your training further? At the SU, we host a number of engaging and informative sessions throughout the year to help you develop in your role as well as personally and professionaly. There will be a variety of workshops and additional activities to get involved in. Keep an eye out to hear about these.
Transferable skills
By working to improve the student experience, Programme Reps develop several key skills that employers have told us they are looking for. You'll become a better communicator through working with your staff and students, take a leadership role in representing your peers, become skilled in negotiation when fighting for change, and become more organised as you prepare for meetings or arrange opportunities for your fellow students. You’ll also have a chance to enhance your data skillset, by using data as evidence when taking student feedback forward.
Awards
At the end of each year NSU holds a variety of different awards that recognise the hardwork and dedication of the volunteers at Northumbria University, including our Annual Awards. As a result of your work as a Programme Rep, you may even win one of these and have a night to celebrate you and the work you have done as a Programme Rep!
When you graduate, providing you have attended your Programme Rep training, you will have your role added to your transcript when you graduate.
